When installing or replacing a window, the issue of finishing slopes and bringing them into full order becomes relevant. Plaster or plasterboard alone is not enough, since the surface needs additional coating. About how to paint the slopes on the windows and get a decent result, we describe below.
Choosing paint for slopes
In theory, paint for window slopes can be used in any desired color, but mainly use the classic white version. The most suitable type is acrylic water-based paint or oil-based paint with the content of drying oil in the composition.
When choosing how to paint the slopes on the windows, keep in mind the recommendations of the masters who do not recommend applying:
- bitumen enamel;
- bitumen-vinyl;
- epoxy bitumen.
If you purchased the oil version without drying oil, you can correct the defect by diluting the paint with this substance yourself. The approach is not forbidden, but take into account the advice of professionals who advocate the purchase of already prepared material, where all proportions are observed. Painting the slopes will consist of two stages, one of which involves the application of a primer layer, the next step is to apply the coloring mixture.
Do not forget that acrylic materials dry much faster than oil and do not exude harsh odors. Another important difference is the matte finish of acrylic as opposed to glossy oil paint.. When applied to a surface, oil form a film, while acrylic paints are considered “breathable”. Both types of paint mixes can equally well be used for both internal and external painting of slopes. After considering the options and deciding how to paint the slopes, you can safely proceed to the preparation of tools.
Required Toolkit
Before proceeding with slope processing, make sure that you have the right tools.
In the work we need:
- big and small brushes;
- container for paint;
- hooket and roller;
- masking tape;
- ladder;
- construction knife;
- primer and clean rag;
- fine abrasive mesh;
- liquid acrylic;
- construction gun.
Paint the drywall finish
Painting slopes from drywall will require preparatory work that will help to achieve the best result. A water-based emulsion paint will be the best option, since it lays well on the surface, and after drying leaves the opportunity to wash the internal slopes without damage to the coating.
We prepare slopes
As soon as you trimmed the slopes with drywall, the next step is to putty all the empty holes, joints and corners. The areas for fastening with self-tapping screws must be slightly expanded before sealing, so that the putty is laid more evenly. This can be done with a Phillips screwdriver, passing through the hole and expanding it by about 3-5 mm across the entire diameter. Allow the applied mixture to dry for several hours, after which treat the surface with an abrasive mesh, carefully passing through the sections of the window. The grid will help get rid of all the bumps and will well clean the prepared surface.
A few words about how to properly paint the slopes so that there are no small cracks. Follow the simple rules:
- Take a sharp-edged paint knife and make a small chamfer, extending 2-3 mm inward, over the area of the joints. Ensure that work is carried out at an angle of 45 ° C with respect to the window frame.
- Cover the frame and slopes with masking tape, leaving 1-2 mm from the base of their surface. Coat the cut points immediately with a primer.
- Using a gun with an acrylic tube, fill the chamfer, and then pass along all the seams with a clean rag or finger to remove the acrylic excess and make the adjoining even.
Do not replace acrylic with silicone materials, as they are poorly stained unlike acrylic. Allow the window to dry well for 12 hours, after which treat the entire area with a primer. It dries quickly enough and there is just enough time to cover the window frame with masking tape. Try to glue the adhesive tape evenly and without errors so that the painted areas can look attractive.
Getting started painting
Pour the paint into a convenient container and mix thoroughly. It is advisable not to save on the cost of the paint material, since expensive paint will require less coating. Similar low cost water emulsion options will lead to high financial costs.
So:
- First, with a small brush, you need to carefully paint over the corners and other places inaccessible to a large brush.
- Finished with corners, you can apply paint over the entire working surface using a large brush or roller.
If you decide to use a roller for painting, give preference to velor products with a small pile, then the paint will lay down in even layers and with a lower consumption.
Try not to spend many times in the same place, evenly painting the entire surface. Poorly stained areas can be passed in a second layer, but after the first one has completely dried. Otherwise, roughness and roughness may appear on the surface.
We paint the plaster finish
Before painting the slopes on windows with a plastered surface, it is necessary to carry out preliminary preparation, which will contribute to high-quality painting.
We prepare slopes
First you need to remove the remains of the mounting foam with a paint knife, smooth out all the protruding areas and cover with two layers of putty. After complete drying, we pass along the surface with an abrasive mesh, smoothing out small defects and irregularities. The subsequent stages of preparation are similar to the previous option:
- We glue the parts of the frame with masking tape, cover the glass with polyethylene or paper, so as not to splatter the paint.
- Ground the prepared surface and let it dry.
Getting started painting
First, we pass with a small brush all the corners and hard-to-reach areas, after which we work with a large brush or roller. The slopes must be painted with a double layer, waiting for the first to dry. Do not attempt to dry the paint with a hair dryer or other equipment, as the material will likely be destroyed in the future.. Strictly monitor the temperature in the room, avoiding drafts and high humidity.
At the end of the work, immediately free the windows from masking tape. If you do this after the paint dries, pieces of material from the slopes can peel off along with the strips of adhesive tape.
